Errata - Birds of Chile
We made the utmost effort to provide
accurate information in "Birds of Chile"
but errors and typos do get through the final edits,
and we apologize for this. In the spirit of presenting
accurate information, we offer the following list
of errors which the reader may wish to correct. If
you find others, please contact
me.
 |
Austral Pygmy-Owl. Brown morph. Torres del Paine.
A. Jaramillo |
Pg. 30. The Scientific name for the Elegant-crested
Tinamou is Eudromia elegans, not Eudromias
elegans. Also, Aysen is in the XI Region, not
XII.
Pg. 36. Sooty Albatross. Geographic codes
should be FLK, SG (rare), as it has occurred in both
areas rarely.
Pg. 40. Snow Petrel. Scientific name should
be corrected to: Pagodroma nivea.
Pg. 44. Phoenix Petrel. Last sentence
should be 30% smaller, not 70% smaller.
Pg. 46. Manx Shearwater. Eliminate "TX#13"
this is an error.
Pg. 56. Gentoo Penguin. Scientific name
is missing, should be Pygoscelis papua.
Pg. 61. Plate 17. Peruvian Booby. The
eyes of this species are chestnut or brownish, not
yellow. Adults should have been illustrated with cleaner
white heads.
Pg. 66. Little Blue Heron. Last sentence
before IDENTIFICATION section. Should read "Now
a common species on the Arica coast"
Pg. 68. Spanish name for Black-crowned
Night-Heron should be Huairavo, not Huiaravo
Pg. 68. Spanish name for Stripe-backed
Bittern should be Huairavillo, not Huiaravillo.
Pg. 74. Ruddy-headed Goose. Alternate
Chilean name should be "Avutarda" not "Avudarda".
Pg. 75. Plate 24. Upland Goose. The female
was incorrectly illustrated with a white vent, it
should be black.
Pg. 76. Flying Steamer-Duck. Last sentence
before VOICE should read ".....similar, while
Flying has brown or rusty breast and flanks unlike
male."
Pg. 89. Plate 31. The image of the Juan
Fernandez subspecies of the Variable Hawk is labelled
in a confusing manner. The Juan Fernandez Hawk is
the grey and white individual with fine white scaling
on the back and coverts immediately above the "J"
of the label (Juan Fernandez Hawk)
Pg. 94. Black Rail. The correct taxonomic
note is TX#29.
 |
Black-throated
Huet-Huet at nest. Conguillio National Park.
A. Jaramillo |
Pg. 105. Plate 39. The Magellanic Plover
and Diademed Sandpiper-Plover are illustrated at a
larger scale (20% greater than the Oystercatchers).
We omitted mention of this in the plate.
Pg. 108. Eskimo Curlew. Scientific name
is incorrect, change to Numenius borealis.
Pg. 114. South American Snipe. The Taxonomic
note should be TX#36
Pg. 114. Puna Snipe. The subspecies are
labelled correctly on the plate, however the text
is incorrect. The race innotata has a largely
unbarred underwing, unlike South American Snipe.
Pg. 128. Andean Gull. First cycle birds
are incorrectly described as having orange-red bill
bases, in fact they are black. Similarly the 1 st
basic individual on Plate 50 should show a black bill,
not orange-red at the base. In fact the blackish bill
of first year Andean Gull is a useful feature in differentiating
from similar age Brown-hooded Gulls.
Pg. 128. Franklin's Gull. The first sentence
of IDENTIFICATION should read: "A smaller, compact
gull, that always shows a dark hood."
Pg. 129. Plate 50. Franklin's Gull. The
third individual from the left, labelled "breeding"
should have been labelled "2nd basic".
Pg. 136. Black Skimmer. Genus should be
"Rynchops" not "Rhynchops".
Pg. 150. Green-backed Firecrown. Scientific
name should be Sephanoides sephaniodes, not
Sephanoides sephanoides.
Pg. 150. Juan Fernandez Firecrown. Due
to a production error, part of the text for this species
was deleted. The missing text reads: L 13 cm (5").
ENDEMIC to Juan Fernández Is. Critically Endangered
(200–400 individuals).
Pg. 154. Chilean Flicker. The Scientific
name is missing. It should be: Colaptes pitius.
Pg. 154. Chilean Flicker. The "I"
is missing in "IDENTIFICATION".

Male Peruvian Sheartail.
Azapa Valley, I Region. A. Jaramillo
|
Pg. 155. Plate 63. The Striped Woodpecker
and Green Kingfisher are illustrated at a larger scale
(by 20%) than the rest of the birds on that page.
We omitted mention of this on the plate.
Pg. 168. Dusky-tailed Canastero. The Scientific
name should be Asthenes humicola.
Pg. 170. Black-throated Huet-Huet. Chilean
name should be "Hued-hued del sur".
Pg. 172. Dusky Tapaculo. This species
is an ENDEMIC, but this was left out of the text.
Pg. 180. The Scientific names of the Negritos
are reversed. The Andean Negrito should be Lessonia
oreas, while the Austral Negrito should be Lessonia
rufa.
Pg. 210. Third line in introductory paragraph.
Replace "Also treated heree..." with "Also
treated here..."
Pg. 211. Plate 91. Band-tailed Sierra-Finch.
The small image above and to the left of the female
is a fresh winter male.
Pg. 213, Plate 92. The White-winged Diuca-Finch
is not labelled on the plate. The White-winged Diuca-Finch
is the bird labelled "female" above and
to the right of the female Common Diuca-Finch, and
beneath the adult White-throated Sierra-Finch. Note
that the White-winged Diuca-Finch is an adult, the
label "female" does not apply. A small scale
image of the species in flight appears in the lower
right had corner of the plate.
Pg. 216. Black-chinned Siskin. It is a
common breeder on the Falkland Islands, as such it
should have been given the code FLK.
Pg. 228. Taxonomic Note 44. The Scientific
name of the Great Horned Owl is given incorrectly
as Buteo virginianus, instead of the correct
name Bubo virginianus.
Pg. 240. English Index. Under Yellow-Finch
you will find "Greater 106, and Lesser 106"
these of course were meant to be under "Yellowlegs".
So after Puna 204, the bold Yellowlegs
subheading should be added.
